Avery Cantello (voice), David Cruz (guitar)

Avery Cantello
From jazz to raunchy blues, The Avery Cantello Blues band is an incredibly fun and versatile group. Made up of Jazz Music Majors around Toronto, including York and the University of Toronto, the band performs revived blues hits dating back to the 1930’s with a new fresh and often comedic sound. The band consists of David Cruz on the guitar, William Dietrich on the bass, Miles Fuller on drums, and Avery Cantello on vocals. The Avery Cantello Blues band has played in and around Toronto at venues such as The Rex Hotel, Emmett Ray, Gate 403, 120 Diner, The Niagara Jazz Fest, The Peterborough Live music festival and continues to perform in the GTA.

David Cruz
David Cruz was born March 31st 1996 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. His musical journey began at age six when his parents enrolled him in piano lessons at The Merriam School of Music. For the next five years these early lessons would lay the foundation of David’s musical education. At age eleven he picked up the guitar and began taking lessons at The Merriam School. This is where David learned the technical aspects of the instrument and developed an interest in blues that would later serve as the foundation of his jazz playing.

In 2013 David did a year at the Humber College College Community Music Program. He played in a jazz combo led by saxophonist Johhny Griffith and studied guitar privately with Emile D’Eon. It was during this time that David had an oppourtunity to meet and attend masterclasses by world renound saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi. This left a huge impression on David, as Bergonzi’s rhythmic conceptions became an important source of inspiration for David’s composition and improvisation.

After highschool David began his undergraduate degree in music at York University. He got the oppouruntiy to study with one of his musical heros: Lorne Lofsky. David adopted Lorne’s thumbpick technique, and ever since his first year has been working to incorporate Lorne’s harmonic and melodic ideas into his playing.

Today David is working towards the completion of his undergraduate degree. He is an active member of the Toronto music scene, playing in various groups in bars, clubs, and private venues all over the city. Primarily FOMA and The Toronto All Star Big Band. At this point in his young career David has played countless weddings, fundrasiers, parties and other corporate events. It does not matter if David is playing at a private party or at The Rex on Queen, he always brings the same flair and enthusiam to his playing.

Bossa Tres

Bossa Tres

Next Week: Thursday, August 8th, 2019 at9:30pm

PWYC

Bossa Tres, Victor Monsiváis (guitar), Abbey Sholzberg (bass)

Bossa Tres
Bossa Três has been performing Bossa Nova and Brazilian Samba classics, as well as a variety of Brazilian rarities and original material since 2001. Their repertoire draws from the greatest of the Brazilian composers and performers like Ary Barroso, Dorival Caymmi, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Newton Mendoça, João Gilberto, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso.

Bossa Três leader Victor Monsivais: vocalist, songwriter, guitarist; has been playing and singing Bossa Nova for over forty years, in particular the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim who, along with Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Van Heusen, is one of his favorite composers. The Trio consists of Victor, who sings Jobim’s songs in their original Portuguese versions and plays the guitar with the true Bossa beat; bassist Frank Sants who plays a deep and mellow-toned bass, and drummer/percussionist Federico Monsivais who plays with a soft, classical feel, yet, with the attack and syncopation of authentic Latin rhythm.

The rarely heard hard-smooth Brazilian and Latin percussion of Bossa Três recreates the atmosphere of a quiet night in Copacabana… the mood of a Carnival in Bahia…a hot Tropicana session in La Habana, or the romance of a classical jazz evening. Bossa Três’ performances bring life to the pieces they play, creating an aura of “alegría and saudade” which are the two basic ingredients of Brazilian music. Bossa Três often appears as a quartet or quintet featuring talented guest musicians, this evening, pianist Dan Farrell and Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet and Flute player Brendan Cassidy, both a perfect fit to Jobim’s music and long time Victor’s associates, will be joining the ensemble.

Many have said that listening to Bossa Três is like being transported to a warm evening in Rio De Janeiro in the fifties…
