This week’s Artistry of… Features Ramsey Lewis
He brings the music to the people. It is as simple as that. That way, that groove, that connection is in the names of so many of his albums. ‘Down to Earth’, ‘More Music from the Soil’, ‘Potluck’, Dancing in the Street’, and ‘Don’t it Feel Good’ just to name some. He was a broadcaster too on radio and TV, presenting the music once again to a wide enthusiastic and receptive audience. There is a very cool music related public service deal too. He is on the Board of Trustees for Chicago’s inner city Merit School of Music music program and The Chicago High School for the Arts, and created the Ramsey Lewis Foundation to help connect at-risk children to the world of music. I was lucky enough to see his genuine excited reaction to meeting the young Joey Alexander for the first time at Koerner hall here in Toronto some years ago. The two artists’ faces lit up when they met each other. They span generations. They shook hands and it was electric. Ramsey Lewis is the real thing.
