Matt Zimbel

Matt Zimbel is no stranger to JAZZ.FM91 fans as the co-leader of Manteca. Matt’s musical resume renders him uniquely qualified to take listeners backstage as the host of Road Stories, an eclectic remix of jazz, world and roots music. Not only will he impress with his knowledge of these genres, music fans will also learn a thing or two from his outrageous and hilarious tales from the back of the tour bus.

Matt has worked as a musician, artistic director, broadcast executive, writer, producer, and television and radio host. His career path has been a long and winding road, full of distinguished accomplishment and a body of work that has been performed, published, licensed and celebrated around the world. Matt’s peers have acknowledged him with Juno, Gemini, and Actra awards, as well as numerous other industry accolades.

At the age of 17, he was touring North America as a percussionist, and he has since recorded more than 6o records as a session musician, performing with Leonard Cohen, Daniel Lanois, Kevin Parent and many others. He has produced remote recordings or television specials with Miles Davis, Tito Puente, Bruce Hornsby, Debbie Harry, Patricia Barber, Maria Joao and many others.

Since 1979, and 12 CD’s Matt has been co-leader of the “world jazz orchestra” Manteca, which has toured the world, playing stages from the Hollywood Bowl to the North Sea Jazz Festival. Manteca has shared bills with Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Ella Fitzgerald.

A native New Yorker, Matt now calls Montreal home.
