Jazz Tribute to Aretha Franklin:

Tribute to Aretha’s Early Jazz Roots

With Music Director Corey Butler

Date: Monday, November 19th, 2018

Before the great Aretha Franklin became the Queen of Soul, in the early sixties she was signed to Columbia records as a jazz singer.  Although mass popularity evaded her then, many of those early recordings are considered classics.

Even after Aretha achieved success as a soul singer, her jazz roots remained an important part of her musical personality.

On November 19th, we pay tribute to the jazz side of the late, Aretha Franklin.

Jazz Tribute to Paul Simon

With Music Director Lou Pomanti

Date: Monday, January 14th, 2019

Paul Simon ranks as one the most accomplished songwriters of the 20th century. Many of his compositions are so well known they have become part of the standards repertoire. At 74 he announced his retirement from touring and released In the Blue Light, a new album that features Simon re-imagining several of his lesser known songs. He is backed by some of the world’s most accomplished jazz musicians.

On January 14th we look back at Paul Simon’s astonishing fifty year career and feature some of these lesser known songs as well as the classics such as “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Still Crazy After All These Years,” and “Graceland.”

The year that changed jazz

With Music Director Colleen Allen

Featuring:

Tara Davidson – saxophone
William Sperandi – trumpet
Adrean Farrugia – piano

1959 was arguably the most creative year in all of jazz history. Many of the contributions we now consider to be jazz “classics” all happened around the same time. Four of the major albums released in 1959 include: Kind of Blue (Miles Davis); Mingus Ah Um (Charles Mingus); Time Out (Dave Brubeck Quartet); Giant Steps (John Coltrane).

Explore these major jazz albums and contributions of 1959 through a special Sound of Jazz evening featuring—music from the year that changed jazz.
