GRAMMY-award winning percussionist and NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington is back with a brand new album, We Insist 2025! in collaboration with GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Christie Dashiell. The album is a reimagining of legendary drummer Max Roach’s seminal album We Insist! (also known as Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite), released in 1960 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, created in collaboration with vocalist Abbey Lincoln and lyricist Oscar Brown Jr.
In honour of Roach’s centennial, Carrington and Dashiell have joined forces along with other collaborators to continue the conversation of freedom and justice. Carrington serves as the album’s executive producer while Dashiell steps into Abbey Lincoln’s role as leading vocalist.
“I set out to make an album that not only captures the spirit of resistance as did the original recording. but also acknowledges connections to dance, trance and joy as forms of protest. Unapologetic self-expression and unabashed joy are important to proclaiming freedom and are manifestations of resistance to oppression,” says Carrington in an Instagram post announcing the album.
The album features appearances from emerging jazz artists such as Morgan Guerin, Milena Casado, Simon Moullier, Matthew Stevens, Devon Gates and guest percussionist Weedie Braimah. The album also features a special guest appearance from trombonist Julius Priester, the only surviving musician from the original Roach recording.
We Insist 2025! is Carrington’s 13th studio album to date since 2022’s New Standards Vol.1 and Dashiell’s third studio album since her 2023 release Journey in Song which was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 2025 GRAMMYS .The album is preceded by two singles, “Freedom Day (Part 1),” and “Driva’man.”
We Insist 2025! comes on June 13, 2025 on all streaming platforms. Vinyl and CD copies are available for pre-order via CANDID Records.
