The 2025 GRAMMY nominations are here and it’s already shaping up to be a progressive year for jazz as it makes its slow, but steady way back to the mainstream categories, thanks to the new generation of rising global jazz stars. This year’s nominations proved no different as various jazz musicians were sprinkled in various categories. Arguably one of the genre’s unlikely stars, hip-hop icon turned flutist and nine-time GRAMMY winner Andre 3000 has three nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Jazz Album for his album New Blue Sun, making this year’s nominations his 28th in total. Also competing for Album of the Year is UK’s Jacob Collier for his latest release Djesse Vol.4. The two artists are competing against the likes of Beyonce, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift for Album of the Year.

Three-time winner Samara Joy is nominated again this year for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her Christmas album A Joyful Holiday and Best Jazz Performance for “Twinkle Twinkle Little Me” from the same album.

Another multiple GRAMMY winner nominated again this year is Jon Batiste for Best Music Film for his 2023 documentary American Symphony which chronicles his rising music career while dealing with his wife Suleika Jaoudad’s battle with leukemia. He’s also nominated for Best Song Written For Visual Media for the song “It Never Went Away” from the film.

Another jazz nominee is the late Chick Corea, who is up for three nominations including Best Jazz Performance and Best Jazz Instrumental album for Remembrance, his collaborative album with banjo player Béla Fleck. Corea, who passed away in 2021, won 27 GRAMMYs and has been nominated 75 times.

Esteemed saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is nominated again this year after becoming a first-time nominee last year, for Best Jazz Performance and Best Jazz Instrumental Album for her latest release Phoenix Reimagined (Live). This year’s inaugural winner for Best Jazz Alternative Album, Meshell Ndegeocello is nominated again in the same category for her latest release, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, an musical ode in honour of the writer and activist’s centennial this past August.

The 67th GRAMMY Awards will take place on Sunday, February 2, 2025 live at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
