Cory Weeds has shared the details of his latest album Home Cookin’, the saxophonist’s second recording with his Little Big Band.
The 11-piece ensemble features a “who’s who” of Vancouver-based jazz players including pianist Chris Gestrin, bassist John Lee, drummer Jesse Cahill, alto saxophonist Steve Kaldestad, tenor saxophonist James Danderer, baritone saxophonist Dave Say, trombonists Brian Harding and Jim Hopson, and trumpeters Brad Turner and Chris Davis.
Together, they’ve delivered two originals alongside tunes by Horace Silver, Thad Jones, Michael Weiss, and more, with arrangements by Bill Coon and Jill Townsend.
Weeds’ first Little Big Band release, 2018’s Explosion, showcased some of the bandleader’s favourite musicians from New York. With the follow-up, he features his favourite musicians from right in his home city. In March of 2023, Weeds booked several evenings for the Little Big Band at Frankie’s Jazz Club in Vancouver. The weekend culminated in the recording of Home Cookin’ at The Warehouse Studios.
Here’s the track listing:
- Home Cookin’
- Corner Kisses
- Blossoms in May
- Power Station
- Thedia
- Lullaby of the Leaves
- Metamorphosis
Cory Weeds’ Home Cookin’ is out Nov. 10, 2023, on Cellar Music Group.
