Brian Barlow sets the standard for Canadian Jazz

So much Canadian jazz-making includes Brian Barlow that his shoulders must ache with bearing the weight of his stellar support.

Every music-making endeavor he has been a part of is enriched by his presence and participation, from leadership through composition, to driving the beat. If there were cards, he’s truly a ‘card-carrying’ member of a select few who shaped the Toronto Sound. A sound of brilliance, blinding attention, and fearless leadership and community in artistry. Barlow was percussionist with the stand-out Canadian ensemble, Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass. A band of some of the country’s best who set a demanding standard appreciated to this day. We have met a few times and each time he has been a gracious, glowing gentleman and artist.

If you look at the list of his music making you might say, “Gee, he’s played with everybody?” The simple answer is, I believe he has and he’s made them all the better for it.
