Blue Notes Records announces the release of And Then Again by Bill Charlap Trio, slated for release on August 16. The album was recorded live at Village Vanguard, one of the oldest jazz clubs in New York City. The album has been described as “a delightful hour of high-wire swing and stunning balladry that documents the trio’s evolution on a set of songbook favorites and pieces by major jazz composers.”
The trio consists of pianist Bill Charlap, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. This is their second album recorded at the Village Vanguard after 2007’s Live at the Village Vanguard, also released on Blue Note and their tenth album overall since the trio was created back in 1997.
What’s the significance of playing at the Vanguard? Well for Bill Charlap, it’s not the history or folklore but the physical structure of the venue itself that brings out the best performances.
“By some extraordinary phenomenon,” Charlap explains in a statement, “Those curtains, the magical shape of the room, the height of the bandstand — the sound on the stage for the artist at the Vanguard is perfect. That’s why such iconic performances happen there. It’s as simple as that.”
And Then Again is available for pre-order and comes out on August 16 via Blue Note Records or wherever music is sold.
