Now Playing:

The Artistry of ... Hiromi

Thursday, 03 November 2016 12:47

She’s a jazz acrobat. To make up a word… a jazz-ro-bat! The piano is her landscape of virtuoso expression. She electrifies and eclipses. Blurs boundaries and in her own way she has re-imagined improvisation. There is a new bar. A first music teacher speaks of Hiromi in a way that sounds like the very sensationally curious experiences of someone who has Chromesthesia – hearing sound as color.

“Her energy was always so high, and she was so emotional,” “When she wanted me to play with a certain kind of dynamics, she wouldn’t say it with technical terms. If the piece was something passionate, she would say, ‘Play red.’ Or if it was something mellow, she would say, ‘Play blue.’ I could really play from my heart that way, and not just from my ears.”

The artistry is the sound of color.
