Grammy Award-winning Christian McBride has received the Bruce Lundvall Visionary Award at this year's Jazz Connect conference in New York.

"For the last few decades, he's been a tireless advocate and spokesman for the music, with a unique knowledge and respect for its past, present and future. And as an educator he's been a mentor and inspiration to several generations of young musicians," said  JazzTimes publisher Lee Mergner.

McBride accepted the honour from American producer and promoter George Wein, Thursday afternoon.

Celine Peterson, daughter of the late Oscar Peterson, was at the event and writes, "He made a truly memorable speech that was an ode to every single person who works to make a difference in our community and those who dedicate their lives to their dreams that are born from a need and want to make our voices in the Jazz world heard."

Prior to accepting the award, McBride told Mack Avenue, "I'm very humbled and honored to receive an award that bears the name of one of the most respected and loved visionaries we have ever known, Bruce Lundvall ... I wish I could have worked with him more often in my career, but the few times we spent together, I always learned a lot. Mostly I learned just what a great person he was. Just being a great person is always the most important thing."
