    Thomas Mason

This week we feature emerging Toronto Jazz guitarist, Thomas Mason.

We caught up with him to see what he's been up to!

    1) When did you participate in the Jazzology program?

I participated in the Jazzology program 2 years ago, after my recital at Mohawk, so it was either late March or in April 2014.

    2) Describe your experience with the Jazzology program. What was your favourite
    aspect?

My favourite aspect was looking at all the records, they’ve got everything at the station! I spent a while with my head sideways just perusing. I was blown away by all the music and the really great atmosphere, everyone was very friendly and encouraging.

    3) Would you recommend this experience to other young musicians? Why?

I would definitely recommend doing Jazzology. It is a great way to promote your music, upcoming gigs, and further your career. It is so much fun and it looks good on the resume!

    4) How has this experience helped in your personal and professional development?

This opportunity helped me to think about how I wanted to be presented and where I was as a musician. Being on the show also meant I had to have recordings done which was a learning process in itself. The experience was also a great way to improve my interview skills and ability to convey myself.

    5) This program is made possible by our generous donors and sponsors who strongly believe in the importance of arts education initiatives. If you had the opportunity to thank them in person, what would you say?

I would tell them how much they are appreciated by myself and a very large community of musicians and music lovers. Not only is Jazzology one of my favourite programs but it has allowed me and so many other young musicians to be heard and appreciated.

    6) Why is music education important?

It brings people together! Music education programs allow people of all ages to learn and play together. It is also a great way for musicians to discover new perspectives and approaches.

    7) Since participating in the program, what have you been doing? (education,
scholarships, graduation, studying abroad, awards, grants, recordings, tours, employment, collaborations, etc.)

Since the program I have been pursuing my Performance degree at the University of Toronto. It I have been studying with Geoff Young and I’ve been playing and writing music with a lot of amazing musicians. I have been working on some projects of my own including a quintet featuring all compositions by Canadian composers.

    8) What are your plans for the future? (Any short term events or long term plans?)

I plan to continuing playing, practicing and teaching as much as possible. I’d like to continue going to school and maybe do a Masters. Making a record in the next couple of years of all original compositions is a goal of mine as well.

    9) How can people learn more about you and your activities? (Website, Twitter
    handle, etc.)

I am currently working on a website. In the meantime, I post all my upcoming gigs on Facebook and recordings on my Soundcloud here.
