Madeleine Ertel, Aline Homzy and Andrew Marzotto are the finalists for the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award for 2022.
Supported by Cheryl and Manuel Buchwald, the award comes with a $10,000 cash prize to help further the recording career of an outstanding emerging jazz artist. Each finalist receives $1,000.
Madeleine Ertel is a trumpeter, composer and arranger who recently graduated from the University of Toronto. She performs regularly in a wide variety of musical contexts throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Aline Homzy is a violinist and composer whose compositions have been performed around the world. She has performed with David Occhipinti, Andrew Downing, Allison Au and many others. Her group Étoile Magique will release their first album later this year.
Guitarist Andrew Marzotto graduated from Berklee in 2016 and returned to Toronto to become a performing and session guitarist accompanying world-class instrumentalists and vocalists. He has also appeared on a diverse collection of albums including jazz and hip hop.
The recipient of the Emerging Jazz Artist Award will be named at an in-person celebration on June 29 at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The award presentation will be followed by separate performances by past recipients Mark Godfrey, Jesse Ryan and Joanna Majoko.
