In celebration of the 100th birthday of Phil Nimmons, the celebrated Nimmons Tribute returns with the second volume of a project honouring the legacy of the Canadian jazz legend.
The new album, titled Volume 2 – Generational, brings new life to vintage Nimmons compositions thanks to brand new arrangements by Phil’s grandson, the pianist, arranger and composer Sean Nimmons, who also contributes two new compositions of his own.
It follows the first edition To the Nth, which was named one of JAZZ.FM91’s top albums of 2020.
The eight-piece band features Sean Nimmons on piano, Kevin Turcotte on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tara Davidson on saxes and clarinet, Mike Murley on tenor saxophone, Alex Dean on baritone sax and bass clarinet, William Carn on trombone, Jon Maharaj on bass and Ethan Ardelli on drums. Heather Bambrick also makes a guest appearance on the final track, “Night Night Smiley.”
Generational builds on the band’s first recording, showing more of the range and diversity in Phil Nimmons’ writing. The eight-track album was a more personal undertaking for Sean Nimmons, who was inspired not only by his relationship with his grandfather but also by the interconnectedness of our collective human family tree.
