Terri Lyne Carrington has published her first nonfiction children’s book called Three of a Kind.
The book is an illustrated poem that’s centred around the musical companionship between the members of the Allen Carrington Spalding Trio comprising drummer Carrington, pianist Geri Allen and bassist Esperanza Spalding.
The book was written by Carrington, a three-time Grammy Award winner and NEA Jazz Master, and illustrated by Ramsess, a multimedia artist and curator. It’s published by Author House in collaboration with The Carr Center, the Detroit-based multidisciplinary arts organization where Carrington has served as artistic director since 2019.
Three of a Kind is described as a book for all ages that’s designed to inspire young women globally to play instruments.
It’s Carrington’s latest in a series of accomplishments this year.
With her wide-ranging new project New Standards, she highlighted women in jazz with a lead sheet book of 101 jazz compositions entirely by women, along with an album of 11 selections from the songbook. The recording was named one of JAZZ.FM91’s top albums of 2022.
It’s been Carrington’s first initiative for Berklee’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, which she formed in 2018.
