Pianist and composer Teri Parker has released her first album as bandleader with her ensemble, Free Spirits, a group dedicated to celebrating the legacy and music of jazz pianists Mary Lou Williams (1920-1981) and Geri Allen (1957-2017).

Founded in 2019, the group has performed all over the country paying tribute to these two jazz talents. Free Spirits also includes some of Canada’s best jazz musicians including Allison Au on alto saxophone, Alison Young on alto saxophone and voice, Rebecca Hennessy on trumpet and voice, Lauren Falls on upright and electric bass, Mackenzie Longpre on drums, and percussionist Mario Allende. The album was recorded at Revolution Recording Studios shortly after a residency at The Rex.

Earlier this month, Parker stopped by Afternoon Drive to chat with host Brad Barker about the album, her transition to bandleader and more.

Peaks and Valleys is available now on all streaming platforms, including Bandcamp. Take a listen to the full interview along with the single “Rosa Mae.”
