A new recording of trumpeter Roy Hargrove is now being released after it was unearthed from the Jazz at Lincoln Center archives.

Titled The Love Suite: In Mahogany – Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the new album features a live performance of a JALC-commissioned, five-piece suite that Hargrove never played in full again. It’s being released this month by Blue Engine Records, the in-house record label of Jazz at Lincoln Center, shortly before what would have been the trumpeter’s 54th birthday.

The performance was captured at Alice Tully Hall in 1993 during one of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s earliest seasons, when Hargrove was 23 years old.

The recording features Hargrove backed by a band that includes saxophonists Ron Blake and Jesse Davis, trombonist Andre Hayward, pianist Marc Cary, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Greg Hutchinson.

Here’s the track listing:

  1. Young Daydreams (Beauteous Visions)
  2. Obviously Destined
  3. Stability
  4. The Trial
  5. Into the Outcome

Roy Hargrove’s The Love Suite: In Mahogany – Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center is out Oct. 13, 2023, on Blue Engine Records.
