The Polaris Music Prize has announced its 40-album long list for 2022.

This year’s nominees include BADBADNOTGOOD, Tanika Charles and LOONY, among others. In total, 223 albums were considered for the long list by the 197-member jury.

BADBADNOTGOOD’s Talk Memory is the Toronto jazz ensemble’s fourth album to be nominated for the Polaris Prize. They were shortlisted for IV in 2017 and for Sour Soul (with Ghostface Killah) in 2015, and they made the long list for III in 2014.

Toronto-based soul and R&B vocalist Tanika Charles made this year’s long list for Papillon de Nuit, her third studio album. It’s also her third Polaris Prize nod, after being long-listed for The Gumption in 2019 and Soul Run in 2016.

Born and raised in Scarborough, LOONY (a.k.a. Kira Huszar) has earned her first Polaris recognition for her debut album soft thing, a blend of neo-soul, jazz, gospel, hip hop and R&B.
