British saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia is back with her new album, Odyssey, released on September 20 via Concord Jazz. The London-based artist is one of the rising stars from the UK Jazz scene since the release of her debut album Nubya’s 5ive, released in 2017.
“For my sophomore album, Odyssey, I wanted to explore the idea of collective listening and gathering outside of a gig experience,” Garcia expressed in an Instagram post. “Imagining somewhere we can just be, meet like-minded people, see the artwork, listen, and share favourite tracks. To build a different kind of space to absorb music, and share my process about how this album came to be.. collective listening is such an incredible transcendent experience, we do it with live music, so why not find other spaces and ways to engage with the music and each other at a different pace?”
The album features guest appearances by Esperanza Spalding, Georgia Anne Muldow and Richie, signaling a strong female presence and Garcia’s pivot to an international audience. There’s no doubt that Odyssey represents the new generation of jazz with Garcia leading the charge.
Odyssey is available now on all streaming platforms and wherever music is sold.
