Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso wins 2022 SASSY Award

Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso is the winner of the 2022 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

The winner took home a cash prize of $5,000. Ekep Nkwelle came in second place, and Allan Harris finished third.

Born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, Rebolloso started singing at the age of five in her parents’ son jarocho group. In 2022, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Universidad Veracruzana. She was a finalist in the solo category of the Young Jazz Award of the National Jazz Orchestra of Mexico and was the first-place winner in the ensemble category, in which she sang with the a cappella group NAWI. Rebolloso is now recording her first solo album and working as a backup singer and vocal director for the Mexican artist Natalia Lafourcade.

The competition was judged by Christian McBride, Regina Carter, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, T.S. Monk and Pat Prescott.

The evening also featured performances by co-winners Tawanda and Gabrielle Cavassa, who competed at last year’s event without a live audience.
