RCM: Ravi Coltrane: The John Coltrane Centennial with special guests Ewen Farncombe & Friends
The visionary saxophonist honours his father’s legacy. Ewen Farncombe and friends open with a Miles Davis set.
Ravi Coltrane is a critically acclaimed Grammy Award nominated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. During a 20+ year career, Mr. Coltrane has worked as a sideman to many, recorded noteworthy albums for himself and others, and founded a prominent independent record label, RKM.
Born in Long Island, the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, Ravi was named after Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar. He was raised in Los Angeles where his family moved after his father’s death in 1967. His mother, Alice Coltrane, was a significant influence on Ravi and it was he who encouraged Alice to return to performance and the recording studio after a long absence.
Ewen Farncombe on piano, Jesse Ryan on sax, Norbert Botos on drums, and Jon Meyer on bass, open the evening with a Miles Davis set. Farncombe is a Juno Award nominated pianist and composer who has earned a reputation as a highly skilled musician. They will reimagine tunes from Miles’ Kind of Blue along with other works by the master.
After the concert, enjoy a beverage and more music at the Postlude Performance in the Leslie and Anna Dan Galleria.
