Black History Month: The Staple Singers, First Family of Song

This lecture explores the music of the Staple Singers from their first gospel recording in 1953 to Mavis Staples’ extraordinary solo career, culminating with Mavis being awarded the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Rock Honors award in September 2019. In addition to exploring the Staple Singers’ transition from gospel music iconoclasts to soul music superstars, attention will be paid to their work as ‘sonic warriors’ during the Civil Rights Movement.
