Laila Biali returns to the Great American Songbook on new album

Juno-winning singer-songwriter and pianist Laila Biali has premiered her take on the jazz standard Autumn Leaves, the first single from her new album Your Requests, Volume 1.

The new release finds Biali, who’s become widely acclaimed for her original material, returning to the Great American Songbook for the first time in more than 10 years.

The shift back to classic jazz repertoire was prompted by her delight in fulfilling the popular song requests of her fans. When Biali asked her social media followers what songs they’d like to hear her cover, they submitted more than 150 songs.

Your Requests, Volume 1 is the first collection of Biali’s personal arrangements of some of those songs. She describes the album as a “musical love letter” to her fans. The full album will be launched in May of 2023 on Empress Records.

Autumn Leaves was one of the first songs Biali ever learned in her early days as a music student at Humber College.

The recording features saxophonist Kelly Jefferson, bassist George Koller, drummer Larnell Lewis.
