Kevin Mak grew up in Guelph, Ont., where he started learning piano at a young age. He was introduced to jazz by one of his teachers, Thomas Hammerton, and joined the Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble led by Brent Rowan. Soon after, Mak joined the salsa band Son De La Guayra and then decided to pursue music as a career. He chose to study music at Mohawk College in Hamilton and studied with pianists Adrean Farrugia and Rob Fekete. During his time at Mohawk, Mak met a lot of other musicians and became involved in a lot of bands and projects and has since been performing all over Ontario in multiple styles ranging from jazz, Latin music, R&B, funk and more. Mak also composes and arranges in many styles and was the winner of the 2020 Dundas Valley Orchestra Composition Competition.
