John Scofield and his trio tackle a wide range of repertoire on the master guitarist’s latest album Uncle John’s Band.
The album finds Scofield’s ensemble with Vicente Archer and Bill Stewart playing material by Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Bernstein, and Miles Davis, along with a selection of jazz standards and seven Scofield originals that range from swingy to funky to folksy.
Uncle John’s Band is Scofield’s third album as a leader on the ECM record label, following the 2020 trio recording Swallow Tales and the 2022 solo album John Scofield. It adds to the prolific guitarist’s catalogue of more than 40 recordings as a leader or co-leader.
Uncle John’s Band was recorded at Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, N.Y., in August of 2022. The album includes liner notes, with commentary on each track, by John Scofield.
