Celebrated Canadian jazz vocalist Joe Coughlin has announced his latest album, Dedicated to You.
The new release will be Coughlin’s debut album with Cellar Music Group, celebrating his music career of 50 years since his debut self-titled album.
In the spirit of his debut vocal jazz album, Coughlin is reunited with pianist Bernie Senensky and drummer Terry Clarke, both of whom performed on that first recording. More of Canada’s jazz heavyweights who make contributions to Dedicated to You include bassist Neil Swainson and saxophonist Ryan Oliver, rounding out Coughlin’s core quartet.
Behind the scenes, Cory Weeds produced the record alongside Coughlin.
Listen to the lead single Nature Boy:
The veteran singer cites Johnny Hartman as an early influence back in his days as a teenager, when he began to develop an interest in and talent for vocal jazz.
Known for his adept fusion of jazz and the Great American Songbook, Coughlin continues to show his admiration of singers like Frank Sinatra and Johnny Hartman. He opens the album with an uptempo, swinging rendition of Eino Swan’s When Your Lover Has Gone, a mainstay of Hartman and Sinatra’s own catalogues. On Dedicated to You, Coughlin makes nods to the Great American Songbook including Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life.
Dedicated to You is a celebration of Coughlin’s long and storied career as a staple Canadian jazz vocalist whose career has brought him to the most renowned jazz clubs in North America and found him working with Canadian legends Clarke, Senensky, Lorne Lofsky and more.
