There is a prominent quote on the homepage of Jeri Brown’s website that I think says as close to it all about her spirit and artistic stamp as anything could: “Josephine Baker was from St. Louis and so am I.”
Baker was fearless, period! I like the immediate ‘that’s a lot of the me I am ‘about’ishness’ of that statement. Sure it’s bold, but then so is the artistry of the singer. Her sound is clear and as clearly present. In a performance she is at one with the band. That’s not about any ego tickling audacity, that’s about being in the moment of the making of the music and the message.
The artistry shines especially in improvisation and expanding expected traditions in the way a voice traverses the musical line. When you listen it will be familiar and then ‘a whole lot of then some’ making the experience an enhanced and very personal adventure freed of any imposed shackling.
No one should tell a story like you tell it and that’s simply the facts.
