The Oscar Peterson Channel

Despite having left us 14 years ago, Oscar Peterson lives on through his music and legacy. He was one of our best, in every sense of the word. He was excellence personified — and man, could he swing. Born in Montreal, lived in Toronto, loved all over the world and always present. Suffice it to say, no other Canadian jazz icon has had the reach, presence or body of work that Oscar Peterson has had.

We’re proud to support his legacy with a stream completely dedicated to him. The newly revamped The Oscar Peterson Channel honourably aims to reflect the attributes that he possessed not just as a performer but as a human being — his level of excellence, his activism, his playful spirit and his joy for music and its makers.

“I’m absolutely over the moon at the launch of JAZZ.FM91’s The Oscar Peterson Channel,” says Céline Peterson, Oscar’s daughter. “Knowing how dedicated dad’s fans are, I have no doubt that admirers of his all over the world will be just as excited about this news as I am. This will also be a wonderful tool for those who are less familiar with my dad’s catalogue to get acquainted with all areas of his career, from his stunning solo performances to JATP jams, and, of course, the legendary trio recordings that everyone loves so dearly. I am grateful to the JAZZ.FM91 team who have worked so hard to create this channel.”

You’ll hear favourites, a few rare recordings, the vocal tracks that he played and sang on, pieces of interviews, commentary from other artists and more. Additionally, we’ll run an occasional program within the stream called In the Land of the Misty Giant, during which musicians from all over the world will choose their top five Oscar Peterson recordings and share stories about that list. Oscar himself once said, “If you have something to say of any worth, then people will listen to you.” Are you listening?

RESPECT: The Best in Vocal Jazz

“Jazz is for telling a story … it’s the storytelling language.”

—Jazzmeia Horn

There is a phrase that often floats around in the jazz world that Ella Fitzgerald was the vocalist that even instrumentalists loved, because she used her voice like an instrument. Thankfully, we no longer live in a world where only instrumentalists reign supreme in jazz. Vocalists tell a story and hit at your heart — and it feels really good to be able to sing along.

RESPECT: The Best in Vocal Jazz shines the spotlight on those who helped define its humble beginnings like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Louis Armstrong. You’ll also hear Canadian newcomers like Caity Gyorgy and Joanna Majoko, the tried and true in Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter, and some surprises along the way. The stream features both standards and original compositions, segments from select interviews, and even a specialty program called Songs My Parents Shared With Me within the mix. Beyond just a playlist of vocal jazz, this stream will draw you close and tell a story as we celebrate and honour vocal jazz.
