Established in 2008, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band is a free music education program available to successful candidates. It provides an opportunity for selected middle- and high-school students to work in an 18-piece jazz ensemble where students develop skills in ensemble playing, improvisation and jazz techniques while interacting in a diverse, professional setting.

Important note: This year, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band and the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Seminar Band programs will begin online due to ongoing health concerns regarding COVID-19. Throughout the year, we will reassess and, if and when conditions permit, begin a graduated return to full rehearsals.

The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band has performed with such jazz luminaries as Randy Brecker, Joey DeFrancesco, Lew Tabakin, Tom Scott, PJ Perry and Guido Basso, and it maintains a busy concert schedule during the year.

  • three major and three minor scales (range of the instrument)
