Son of the great soul singer Aaron Neville, Ivan Neville is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and singer.
He first started playing in a band in 1977 — Renegade was its name — and, still as a teenager, he joined his father and uncles in the Neville Brothers. Though he has performed often with the Neville Brothers, he established himself as a go-to studio and touring musician. He was a member of Bonnie Raitt’s band in the late 1980s, and he guested on other recording dates by a plethora of artists including the Rolling Stones, Don Henley, Robbie Robertson, Rufus, Delbert McClinton, and Keith Richard’s Expensive Winos. He and his cousin, Ian Neville (son of Art Neville), formed Dumpstaphunk in the early 2000s.
Ivan Neville recently released Touch My Soul, his first solo album in 20 years. He joined us in the Gumbo Kitchen for a conversation.
