Singer-songwriter Ian Shaw has announced his new studio album Greek Street Friday.
Described as “soulful, funky and bold,” the 11 new songs draw inspiration from the English artist’s early musical and lyrical influences, including David Bowie, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, early Elton John, and Billy Joel.
Watch the music video for “To Be Held”:
Shaw has never been one to conceal an often outspoken view of injustice and equality, and Greek Street Friday finds him doing so with typical poetic frankness. He also pays homage to friends and icons, and muses on our place in a complicated world. While most of the songs are partially autobiographical vignettes, Shaw also chose to include a new take on a favourite song from one of his musical idols, Rickie Lee Jones’s “Blinded By the Hunt.”
Co-written and produced with Jamie Safir (Kylie, Birdy, Will Young) and recorded at Livingston and Cowshed Studios, Greek Street Friday features an all-star band of session players, including drummer Ian Thomas (George Michael, Van Morrison, Céline Dion), guitarist David Preston (Melody Gardot, Curtis Stigers) and saxophonist Iain Ballamy (Everything But The Girl, Hermeto Pascoal, Loose Tubes).
