The Artistry of… Ian McDougall

Canada is home to some of the best trombone players in the world. Names like William Carn, Meiron Kelly, Russ Little, Rob McConnell and Chris Butcher are players who are and were well-known worldwide. Each have made their mark in jazz strongly at home and internationally. True to the spirit of the country they call home, they have shared in giving back and lending a helping hand to those who follow in their footsteps. Excellence in education is paramount.

One of the standout players is Ian McDougall. An Albertan by birth, he has lived in Victoria, B.C., for many years, where he continues to be an active composer and teacher. Now a professor emeritus, he taught trombone, composition and jazz studies at the University of Victoria until 2003.

As part of the legacy of The Boss Brass and the Toronto sound, McDougall is one of Canada’s greatest jazz ambassadors. Dazzling solos, stunning arrangements of standards and leadership are shining lights of his career.

The Artistry of… airs Wednesday evenings on Dinner Jazz with John Devenish.
