Groovy: what a good word; its best life spanning the 1950s through to the 70s. It had single word appeal, saying it all about cool and in-the-pocket-fashionable and hip.
Howard Roberts was one of so many once upon a timers where groovy could be part of their definition. His start with the guitar came early, as early as 8 years old, by his teens he was already playing professionally. A session player dynamo Roberts played with the storied and renowned session players super-cast, The Wrecking Crew. He was a master of West Coast cool style, a sound and way of being, where everything cool meant finding a way to be all about it without having to splash it all over the place. For the listener, the sound gives you an immediate understanding. A, ‘yeah, that’s cool,’ appreciation without having to do anything but get it. As easy to feel as defined by another expression that could see some life again: y’dig. He was a producer and made many solo recordings, you can hear him on songs featuring the Monkees and The Electric Prunes.
The artistry is simply Howard Roberts groovy, and that’s, well, the everything plus!
