Congratulations are in order for Cuban-Canadian pianist and composer Hilario Durán who won Best Arrangement of the Year at this year’s Latin GRAMMY awards ceremony for the song “Night in Tunisia,” from his album Cry Me A River, released last year. The 2024 awards ceremony took place on November 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.
Cry Me A River is Durán’s first big band album in 17 years showcasing the Afro-Caribbean tradition of Latin jazz. The album also won a JUNO this year for Jazz Album of the Year.
“Night in Tunisia” is a musical composition originally written by Dizzy Gillespie in 1942, also referred to as “Interlude” on other recordings. The jazz standard has been covered by the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Art Blakely, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and more.
