Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Gregory Porter is launching a new cooking show on YouTube called The PorterHouse.

In the weekly series, Porter dons a chef’s smock and apron along with his signature “jazz hat” as he shares some of his favourite recipes and tells viewers the stories behind them.

“Music and food: Two things in life I truly love have always been connected,” Porter says in the trailer. “The kitchen was actually my home before I ever stepped on stage. Writing songs and creating dishes have always inspired me. I like to make authentic food for authentic people.”

Before become an internationally renowned and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, Porter actually worked in a kitchen. When he moved to Brooklyn in 2004, he became a chef at his brother Lloyd’s restaurant. He performed there and at other venues in the neighbourhood, and eventually released his debut album Water in 2010 and signed with Blue Note in 2013.

Episodes of The PorterHouse premiere weekly on Wednesdays starting May 12 at youtube.com/zagat.

The series runs until June 16. The show’s finale will feature a live Q&A and performances by Gregory Porter and his full band.
