Two of this year’s Grammy winners have paired up for another talent-packed collaboration.
Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and vocalist Aymée Nuviola’s new duo album Live in Marciac captures their concert at the Chapiteau Concert Hall as part of the 2021 Jazz in Marciac festival.
Live in Marciac is filled with Latin jazz classics and original songs, putting Rubalcaba and Nuviolia’s collective mastery as established musicians on full display.
Both Rubalcaba and Nuviola have recently earned acclaim in their solo careers: Rubalcaba won the Grammy for best jazz instrumental album for his work with Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette on Skyline, while Nuviola won best tropical Latin album for Sin Salsa No Hay Paraíso. They’ve also been celebrated for their collaborative work, with Viento y Tiempo – Live at Blue Note Tokyo earning a nomination for best Latin jazz album.
The duo had worked together throughout the pandemic and jumped at the chance to embark on a multi-city European tour, including their performance at Jazz in Marciac. The pair was eager to rekindle their musical relationship and return to the stage.
“To play live again is to come back to life, Rubalcaba says. “It is to live again as we know how to do it, and doing it with Aymée is divine.” Nuviola describes their working relationship during this period as “totally genuine and unique … with all the rigor that Cuban music deserves.”
Here’s the track listing:
