Toronto-based drummer and composer Ernesto Cervini has announced the latest effort of his long-running sextet Turboprop, a collection of Canadian favourites titled A Canadian Songbook.

The Juno-winning ensemble tackles a variety of material by artists including the Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace, Allison Au, James Hill, and William Carn, along with a couple of Cervini originals.

“I’m happy to present my reflection on the Canadian music scene and the wonderful composers within it,” Cervini writes in the liner notes. “I’ve always been very proud of my Canadian heritage. I love how supportive this country is of artists, and I think that support is reflected in the success Canadian artists have on a global scale.”

Led by Cervini, Turboprop also features alto saxophonist Tara Davidson, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm, trombonist William Carn, pianist Adrean Farrugia, bassist Dan Loomis.

A Canadian Songbook follows Turboprop’s three previous albums: Abundance (2018), Rev (2017) and Turboprop (2015). Turboprop’s personnel also played an important role on Cervini’s recent Juno-nominated solo album Joy.

Here’s the track listing:

  1. Skeletons
  2. When I Fall
  3. If, Then
  4. Stuck Inside
  5. Clumsy
  6. Aureole
  7. The Inertia of Complacency

Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop’s A Canadian Songbook is out March 8, 2024, on TPR Records.
