The 2024 Polaris Music Prize Short List was announced yesterday afternoon, exactly one month after the 2024 Long List was unveiled in Toronto. Folk artist Alison Russell and musician/composer Jeremy Dutcher made the list. Out of the 10 albums that made the cut, Dutcher is the only previous winner for his album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (2018). In addition, Dutcher is one of the 10 nominees who will be performing at the Polaris Gala event in September.

Both Russell and Dutcher have been nominated for Polaris Music Prize in the past for their previous projects yet it’s Russell’s first time as a short list nominee. It’s also a big year for music out of Quebec as five of the ten nominees are either from or currently based in the province.

The Polaris Music Prize, worth $50,000, is awarded to a Canadian artist who creates an outstanding body of work solely based on artistic merit and not on record sales.

Take a look at the 10 albums that made the Short List:

Bambii, Infinity Club
The Beaches, Blame My Ex
Charlotte Cardin, 99 Nights
DijahSB, The Flower That Knew
Jeremy Dutcher, Motewolonuwok
Elisapie, Inuktitut
Cindy Lee, Diamond Jubilee
Nobro, Set Your Pussy Free
Allison Russell, The Returner

The winner of the 2024 Polaris Music Prize will be announced on September 17 at the Polaris Gala at Massey Hall.
