Alex McPherson is a Toronto-based improviser and composer. Originally from Tottenham, Ont, he enrolled in Humber College’s Bachelor of Music program in 2021. The following year, he would become the recipient of the Gordon and Anne Wragg Music Scholarship. His versatility and proficiency on both acoustic and electric bass has quickly made him a sought-after bassist in the city’s music scene. He continues to develop a highly aggressive personal style that draws from a wide range of influences including Tim Berne, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Haden among many others. Aside from performing and composing, McPherson has recently been dedicating a great deal of time to transcribing and studying the music of Julius Hemphill.
