Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba has shared his take on the classic Bill Withers song Just the Two of Us following the passing of the legendary soul singer.
Initially recorded for CBC’s Hot Air, the tune has now been widely released for fans to enjoy. It’s a delicate, breezy cover that finds Cuba singing alone with his acoustic guitar — in English and Spanish, as he often does — while retaining the funkiness of the original.
Written by Withers, Just the Two of Us was first recorded by Grover Washington Jr. and Withers and released in 1981, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It’s the second of a trio of songs that the Juno Award-winning and Latin Grammy-winning artist has recorded at his home studio in Smithers, B.C. Earlier in May, Cuba shared Diablo De Un Segundo, and in June he’ll release Concéntrica Canción.
Cuba has won two Juno Awards for world music album of the year: Humo de Tabaco in 2006 and Agua del Pozo in 2008. He’s won three Latin Grammys, including best new artist, and has been nominated three times for the Grammy Award for best Latin pop album.
Cuba’s latest album, Sublime, came out in 2019.
