Congratulations are in order for bassist Ron Carter who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University during their commencement ceremony on May 19.

Carter is one of eight honorary degree recipients to be honoured during Yale’s commencement activities for 2025. Other recipients include historian Henry Louis Gates Jr., director and choreographer Debbie Allen, and former presiding bishop of the Episcopal church The Right Reverend Michael B. Curry.

“Once again I find myself in good company,” expressed Carter in a Facebook post on his official artist page. Widely considered one of the greatest jazz artists of our time, even at the age of 88, Carter remains active touring the world, bringing joy to the lives of others through his artistry.

Yale University has been giving out honorary degrees since 1702, recognizing the achievements of selected recipients and their contributions for the common good. This tradition is meant to inspire graduates to aspire to excellence and to value creativity, curiosity, discipline, integrity, and a passion for public service.
