Winnipeg-bred drummer Curtis Nowosad is quickly becoming one of jazz’s in-demand musicians. Now he’s back with his fourth solo album, I Am Doing My Best, slated for release Friday, June 6 via La Reserve Records. The album is the follow-up to 2024 EP’s PRIMORDIAL in collaboration with guitarist Andrew Renfoe, who also appears on the album.
Currently based in New York City, Nowosad is active in the city’s jazz scene working with some of the best in contemporary jazz including Braxton Cook, Jazzmeia Horn, Jane Monheit, Brianna Thomas, Jocelyn Gould, Bria Skonberg, Philip Harper, Marc Cary and Craig Harris. Dinner Jazz host John Devenish calls Nowosad among the new vanguard of jazz’s rawest energy and rightfully so!
I Am Doing My Best is an album that prompts the listener to engage in healing because we all have to heal from some thing or multiple things. For Nowosad, he believes “if we can begin the messy, perpetual process of healing ourselves, we can begin the work of helping to heal our little corners of the world…creating a kinder, gentler, more equitable and more forgiving world for future generations.”
The album is co-produced by JUNO award-winning guitarist & singer-songwriter Joey Landreth, and features 2024 Discover Women in Jazz Participant Joanna Majoko on vocals and Andrew Renfroe on guitar. Three singles precede the album, “We Do We”, “(I’m Learning to Be) Kind”, and “Carry You Home”.
I Am Doing My Best comes out June 6 on all streaming platforms, CD and vinyl copies are available via Bandcamp.
