There was an old living room sized organ in my Aunt and Uncle’s home in Philadelphia. It had all kinds of stops you could push for different effects and foot pedals too. You could set up rhythms and play along. My Uncle had an inspired collection of records: Jazz, R&B, Soul, Blues, and Classical. Loving all of it, I found a sweet spot in the Jazz and R&B tracks. I could listen for long sessions letting my mind spin and get dizzy. Then I would try to swing just as cool at that keyboard.

Swinging organ, that’s the Brother Jack McDuff sound. Inspirational soul touching grooves. There was no way to stay still, you had to dance, tap your feet, and nod your head to the rhythm and the way the organ played cruising melodies and percussive lines in step with the drums or other instruments in the band. The effect was like tickling the senses.

Organ jazz, it’s got the groove that moves.
