One of Canada’s most exciting voices in jazz is making his mark in a beloved jazz tradition – releasing a holiday album!
Alex Bird and The Jazz Mavericks return for their first holiday album, Another Christmas Day, a collection of original Christmas songs written by Bird that capture the warmth and love of the holiday season.
To capture the holiday essence, Bird and the band recorded the album live off the floor without the use of headphones or studio monitors, evoking an old school holiday feel.
With Another Christmas Day, Bird aims to highlight both the light and dark aspects of the holiday season. “Some of the greatest Christmas classics are full of yearning and heartbreak ,and we wanted to capture both the light and dark of this time of year,” says Bird. “Family, love, hope; sometimes it feels just slightly out of grasp. Not everyone has a great Christmas or someone to spend it with and some of this album is dedicated to that very real feeling and sentiment.”
The album was produced with Bird alongside his musical partner and collaborator Ewen Farncombe (piano). The album features members of the Jazz Mavericks including Jacob Gorzhaltsan (Tenor Sax & Clarinet), Julian Anderson-Bowes (Bass), Norbert Botos (Drums & Jingle Bells).
Bird stopped by the jazz.fm91 studios earlier this week to chat with Jeff Chalmers about the album during Afternoon Drive.
