Yoshi Wall – Bassist

This week’s Member Profile features bassist Yoshi Wall. He shared some of his thoughts about the program:

1) How has the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band experience been so far?

Absolutely incredible. Great tunes, great shows and the greatest musicians. Where could you go wrong?

2) What has been your favourite performance this year?

JC, Matteo and Nick from the Youth Big Band performing with Robi Botos.

3) What upcoming event(s) are you looking forward to the most and why?

Our summer gigs are going to be amazing.

4) The Youth Big Band program is made possible by our generous donors and sponsors who strongly believe in the importance of arts education initiatives. If you had the opportunity to thank them in person, what would you say?

I would say thank you so much for giving me this golden opportunity and that they’re doing the most important work they could possibly do by making sure we have a means of doing what we cherish so much. It’s really a great learning process.

5) How has your playing changed since you joined the Youth Big Band?

I’d say I’m finally competent. Especially my sense of time and rhythm. It’s ridiculous how much I’ve grown.

6) What music are you listening to at the moment that you find particularly inspiring?

Robert Glasper. His style is just so expressive.

7) Do you have any plans for the summer?

I plan to work in childcare for the summer.

8) Do you plan to audition for the group next year?

Is water wet?

9) Is there anything you’d like to add?

YBB has been one of the most memorable musical experiences I’ve ever had. I won’t soon forget anything about it.
