The Artistry of… Joni Mitchell

AO Joni Mitchell:

Drawing from folk, pop, rock, and jazz, Mitchell’s songs often reflect social and environmental ideals as well as her feelings about romance, confusion, disillusionment, and joy

That descriptive list of what the music reflects comes from an online posting. It disturbs a bit. It seems like a shallow forced politic. It’d be irresponsible to not recognize a politic in Mitchell’s body of work but to peg her as only that seems less than flattering. I believe Joni, the artist, reflects what touches her soul. She writes about the avenues taken because of life. Maybe it is this spirit about her that immediately resonates with all who listen—really listen—to what she says with what she’s written and shared. I think the experience comes in the colour yellow and is like having someone who really wants you to feel sing to you while holding your hand. Love, loss, gain, contemplative thought. All of that and so much more are what you do when you live. So much about the being alive of being alive part of being alive is how Joni sounds.
