The Artistry Of … Grant Green
A quote from Downbeat magazine goes like this: “The first thing I learned to play was boogie-woogie. Then I had to do a lot of rock & roll. It’s all blues, anyhow.” I think it speaks volumes about the artistry of Grant Green. There was a strong foundation in gospel too. Imagine the luxury of all of the elements of those different styles all wrapped up in one dynamic player? You can hear it in the lines, the sensitivity, and the spirit that pervades. What you hear is simplicity of sound where expression is an equal. The rhythm and the blues of rhythm and blues, the disciplines of bebop and the touch of soul jazz. It’s all just so very cool.
