SUMMARY:TOMSON HIGHWAY AND PATRICIA CANO: SONGS IN THE KEY OF CREE Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:“In The (Post) Mistress\, you see Highway’s idea of beauty – a Peruvian-Canadian from Northern Ontario singing to a Brazilian beat in an indigenous language. It is a beautiful vision.” — J. Kelly Nestruck (Globe and Mail Review\, Oct. 21st\, 2016) \n“English is so hierarchical. In Cree\, we don’t have animate-inanimate comparisons between things. Animals have souls that are equal to ours. Rocks have souls\, trees have souls. Trees are ‘who\,’ not ‘what.” – Tomson Highway \nSongs in the Key of Cree is a compilation of songs written over the past thirty years by Cree-Canadian playwright/ songwriter/pianist Tomson Highway. The songs in the show are taken from five of his musicals – Rose\, The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito\, The (Post) Mistress\, The Sage\, the Dancer\, and the Fool and his latest new musical as yet to be titled. \nWhat makes the songs unique is their Cree lyrics – and playfulness! Cree is the most spoken Native language in Canada today\, and many of Canada’s most well-known place names are of Cree origin including Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan\, Chicoutimi\, Quebec and Ottawa. Cree is a very rhythmic language that lends itself very naturally to music and music-making\, and the style of the music is “cabaret.” Think Cole Porter and Kurt Weill…with Cree\, English\, French and even Spanish lyrics! (Mr. Highway is tri-lingual in Cree\, his mother tongue\, and French and English.) \nThe songs will be sung by extraordinary Peruvian-Canadian cabaret singer\, Patricia Cano\, accompanied by jazz saxophonist Marcus Ali\, and by Tomson Highway himself on the piano. \nWriter\, Composer and Musician Tomson Highway was born in a snow bank on the Manitoba/Nunavut border to a family of nomadic caribou hunters. He had the great privilege of growing up in two languages: Cree\, his mother tongue\, and Dene\, the language of the neighbouring nation\, a people with whom they travelled and hunted. His parents\, with no access to books\, television or radio\, would tell their children stories\, and Tomson fell in love with the oral tradition of storytelling. When he was six\, he was taken from his family and placed in residential school. Although he resented being taken away from his parents\, he did learn music\, and had plans to become a concert pianist. \nTomson enjoys an international career as playwright\, novelist\, pianist\, and songwriter. His critically acclaimed works include the plays The Rez Sisters\, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing\, Rose\, Ernestine Shuswap Gets her Trout and the best-selling novel Kiss of the Fur Queen. For many years\, Tomson ran Canada’s premiere Native theatre company Native Earth Performing Arts (based in Toronto)\, out of which emerged an entire generation of professional Indigenous playwrights\, actors and many Native theatre companies in Canada. \nTomson Highway’s many awards include the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best New Play and Best Production (three wins\, five nominations)\, the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama (two nominations)\, the Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award (two wins)\, winning the Toronto Arts Award (for outstanding contributions made over the years to the City of Toronto cultural industries)\, the Wang Harbourfront International Festival of Authors Award\, the Silver Ticket Award (from the Dora Mavor Moore Awards\, for outstanding contributions made over the years to the Toronto theatre industry)\, the National Aboriginal Achievement Award (2001)\, and the Order of Canada (1994).

SUMMARY:JUDITH LANDER Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:Judith Lander is a consummate interpreter of cabaret’s finest offerings. Her repertoire ranges from pop to Broadway\, with the likes of Stephen Sondheim\, to classical cabaret including Kurt Weil and Jacques Brel\, with a sprinkling of jazz. \n“My music is very emotionally driven\, as well as musically driven\, because I have been a singer for 50 years\,” says the singer\, composer and actor. She has performed on Broadway and in other major North American cities in the original hit production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris\, culminating with a memorable performance with Brel himself at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall. \n“I have quite a background of music\, so it is about connecting and reaching the hearts of the audience. It’s very important to me to do that. There are a lot of singers these days who are imitations of imitations. They are not really connected as much to the musical lyrics as they should be\, and I feel audiences today really hunger for that\,” says the Winnipeg native who now lives in Oakville\, Ont. \n“Cabaret is an eclectic combination of music that is either political\, emotional or humorous\, and it is coming back because people are tired of the sterility that’s out there. Usually songs that have a personal bent have more emotional nutrition and people need that right now.” \nLander\, who is respected as a composer\, most notably for compositions for ballet\, including Diary\, which has been performed by the National Ballet of Canada\, the Hubbard Street Company of Chicago and the American Ballet Theater\, recently released an acclaimed recording of songs she has sung on stages across the world entitled “In My Life.” \nThe 65-year-old has made a remarkable comeback\, having retired from cabaret performance in her 50s. “What is amazing to me is that I’m in my 60s and I still sing really well\, and that\, to me\, is an amazing gift\,” Lander says. “If you are trained properly\, there’s no reason why you can’t maintain a lot of your voice\, but you will lose a certain amount of your range\, or it will shift. For me\, I go a little lower with my range\, but there were songs that I couldn’t have done before\, like September Song – but I was too young to do it – or Carousel by Brel that goes faster and faster and is quite mad at the end\, and when I was young\, it was extremely difficult to maintain the song. Now that I’m older\, I can handle it much better because of experience\, the [richer] interpretations and the power that I have at this age.”

The honor celebrated her lustrous career of excellence in music\, film\, television and theatre\, as well as her cultural influences\, humanitarian work and her contributions to American culture. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences celebrated her remarkable\ncareer with its highest honor\, The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. \nHer portrayal of Billie Holliday in the classic film\, “Lady Sings the Blues” resulted in an Oscar nomination and a trophy at the The Golden Globe Awards. Co-starring as an aspiring designer in the 1975 romantic comedy\, Mahogany\, Ross felt the role lent the perfect opportunity to personally sketch and design all the fashion in the timeless film. \nAs a stage actress\, she won Broadway’s top honor with a Tony Award for her one-woman show\, “An Evening with Diana Ross.” The same show was later broadcast as a special on television. From her landmark solo career to the early days as the leader of The Supremes Diana Ross shaped the sound of popular music\, changing the landscape and paving way to contemporary music.\nHer voice\, described as “honey with soulful sensibility\,” produced 14 Top ten albums\, 18 #1 songs and music sales exceeding 100 millions units around the world. The latest in a string of #1s includes a new remix of the 1971 classic\, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough 2017” which topped the Billboard Dance Club Chart this year. \nIn 2017\, the American Music Awards presented Ms Ross with the Lifetime Acheivement Award. In1993\, she earned a Guinness World Record for her success in the United States and United Kingdom by having more hits than any other female artist on the charts with a career total of 70 hit singles. Career milestones include induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, The Songwriters Hall of Fame\, National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Hero Award\, NAACP Entertainer Award\, Billboard’s Female Entertainer of the Century Award\, The Soul Train Legend Award\, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and will received the American Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2017. And Ross is also one of the few celebrities to have two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.\nOn July 21\, 1983\, Diana Ross drew a crowd of over 800\,000 people to New York’s Central Park\, one of the biggest audiences in history for a live concert. Soon after the show began\, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show\, but she pushed on for much of the set\, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the storm put an end to the performance\, but not before she promised her fans that she would return the next day. True to her word\, she performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York City. \nHer love for life\, her never-ending wonder\, her appreciation of goals and achievements and her sheer human spirit define the icon that is Diana Ross.

SUMMARY:JUNE GARBER AND STU MAC Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:STU MAC is a dynamic performer whose charisma and charm delight audiences at every turn. His smooth tone and signature phrasing create a sound that you won’t soon forget. \nWith a vocal style reminiscent of Sinatra\, Tormé or Baker\, Stu Mac brings to life the phrasing and tone with which the ‘Great American Songbook’ was meant to be sung. Stu is a dynamic performer who continues to play a variety of venues throughout Toronto and southern Ontario. \nAfter receiving the ‘jazz vocalist of the year’ award while attending Humber College in 1998\, Stu went on to record and release his debut album ‘In a moment’ in 2000. He has studied with jazz notables\, such as Raneé Lee\, and performed with a number of Canada’s jazz luminaries\, including his Humber contemporary\, Laila Biali. Stu is set to release his latest project ‘Out of the Blue’ this summer and is excited to bring his band and new material to the Niagara Jazz Festival. \nJUNE GARBER is one of Canada’s most accomplished jazz vocalists. Her luscious\, masterful interpretive skills and on-stage personality capture audiences and draw them in\, enveloped by her warmth and sheer joy at being on stage. Every song that she chooses to sing connects to a base truth within – so there is never any artifice. Her voice reflects each emotional shift that the writer intended\, whether swinging with an up-tempo jazz song or telling a story with a soulful ballad. The stagecraft she learned in her earlier career as an actor is still evident in her singing performances today. \n“Of course that’s the miracle of June Garber; her instinct for capturing and delivering the details of a story and the nuances of emotions – the combination of sensuous luxury\, effortless precision\, characterful interpretation and the warmth of empathy.” – Raul DaGama \nJune has toured and performed as a singer in major venues across Canada and the United States\, Cuba\, the Caribbean\, Mexico\, South Africa\, and Australia. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout North America and with big bands in Toronto and Sarasota\, Florida. Her latest album This I Knowweaves a tapestry of emotions – love\, joy\, pain\, sadness – presented in some wonderful jazz songs that are not often recorded. It continues to receive to receive rave reviews and extensive airplay around the world.
