SUMMARY:Herbie Hancock & Kamasi Washington
DESCRIPTION:Herbie Hancock\nHerbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations\, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades and 14 Grammy® Awards\, including Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters\, he continues to amaze audiences across the globe. \nThere are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. As the immortal Miles Davis said in his autobiography\, “Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk\, and I haven’t heard anybody yet who has come after him.” Now in the fifth decade of his professional life\, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture\, technology\, business and music. Though one can’t track exactly where he will go next\, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands. \nKamasi Washington\nWhen Kamasi Washington released his tour de force LP\, The Epic\, in 2015\, it instantly set him on a path as our generation’s torchbearer for progressive\, improvisational music that would open the door for young audiences to experience music unlike anything they had heard before\, and exceeded any notions of what “jazz” music is. \nWashington followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar\, John Legend\, Run the Jewels\, Ibeyi and the creation of “Harmony of Difference\,” a standalone multimedia installation during the prestigious 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In June 2018\, Washington released Heaven and Earth to wide praise. The album garnered “best of” awards from Pitchfork\, NPR\, Variety\, GQ\, MOJO\, and Complex among others.

SUMMARY:BILL MAYS AND LORNE LOFSKY Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:A fine pianist\, Bill Mays has often worked behind the scenes\, leading to him being a somewhat overlooked jazz improviser. Mays worked in Los Angeles as a studio musician from the late ’60s on\, accompanying Sarah Vaughan (1972-1973) and Al Jarreau (1975)\, but mostly doing session work. In the early ’80s\, he began to record jazz as a sideman with Howard Roberts\, Bud Shank\, Bobby Shew\, Road Work Ahead\, and Mark Murphy. In 1984\, Mays moved to New York and since then he has worked with Murphy\, Gerry Mulligan\, Ron Carter\, James Moody\, Sonny Stitt\, Art Pepper\, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra\, among others. In the late 80’s Mays recorded for DMP (duet records with Ray Drummond) and in 1992 released several discs on Concord. These dates found Mays in a variety of settings\, beginning with the unaccompanied Live at Maybeck Recital Hall\, Vol. 26 (Bill Mays at Maybeck)\, followed by a trio date An Ellington Affair\, a duet with guitarist Ed Bickett Concord Duo\, Vol. 7: Bill Mays and Ed Bickert and finallly backed by a full band on Mays in Manhattan. In 2001 the pianist recorded his 11th album as a leader and his first for the Palmetto label\, Summer Sketches\, followed two years later by Going Home. \nLorne Lofsky is an internationally recognized jazz guitarist. Born and raised in Toronto\, he has been playing professionally for the last 42 years. He has played/toured or recorded with a who’s who of the jazz world\, including Oscar Peterson\, Ed Bickert\, Rob McConnell\, Chet Baker\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Pepper Adams\, Ray Brown\, Neils Henning Orsted Pederson\, Rosemary Clooney\, Kirk MacDonald\, Dave Holland\, and many other respected members of the international jazz community. \nIn addition\, he has been a faculty member at York University’s Fine Arts/Music Program since 1978 and also teaches at the Humber College Community Music Program. SUMMARY:COLIN HUNTER AND THE ANTHONY TERPSTRA SEVENTET – “MOSTLY FRANK” Live at Jazz Bistro
DESCRIPTION:While some people spend their whole lives dreaming of becoming a star\, others make it happen in addition to enjoying meaningful careers. This is Colin Hunter’s story: a singer who soared to extraordinary heights in his business career and now shines brightly in the entertainment industry. \nColin Hunter is the Chairman and founder of Sunwing Travel Group. In 2005\, to commemorate the launch of Sunwing Airlines\, he recorded his first Big Band CD “Come Fly with me”. Since then he has recorded 12 CD’s. Six with Big Band leaders Anthony Terpstra in Ontario and Roland Martel in Quebec City\, and six with the Joe Sealy Quartet in Toronto. Colin performs regularly in Ontario and Quebec and at Jazz Festivals in Montreal\, Quebec City\, Mexico\, Dominican Republic\, and Dubai. In addition his schedule includes regular gigs at his own Jazz Bistro\, in Toronto. \nKnown for his smooth voice and relaxed rhythmic interpretations\, Colin Hunter takes pleasure in being on stage and entertaining his audience. He is proof that an entrepreneur/crooner can follow his passions and fly as high as he wants. \nHis music is features on iTunes\, Spotify\, and CD Baby\, and is mostly drawn from the great American Songbook. \nMulti-instrumentalist and bandleader ANTHONY TERPSTRA’s Starlight Orchestra is made up of sixteen pieces including five sax\, four trumpets\, three trombones\, piano\, bass\, drums and vocalist. His Seventet is a unique ensemble put together\, not to replace the big band\, but as an added feature. Influenced by the small band writing of Marty Paitch and Gerry Mulligan\, the Seventet has a rich sound with clean lines\, contrapuntal writing and soloing in and out of ensemble.
