SUMMARY:Caribbean Christmas Mixtape with Larnell Lewis\, Joy Lapps + special guests
DESCRIPTION:Join us this holiday season for the second edition of the Caribbean Christmas Mixtape\, a Sound of Jazz: Live to Air concert featuring Larnell Lewis\, Joy Lapps and special guests. \nBacked by the talents of pianist Jeremy Ledbetter\, bassist Rich Brown\, guitarist Jeremy Hector and vocalist Subria Lapps\, Joy and Larnell take inspiration from their upbringing as two Canadians born to Afro-Caribbean parents in the 1980s\, and the traditions they keep as they nurture their own family. They’ve taken influence from the calypso\, zouk\, reggae\, soul and R&B sounds of their ancestry and blended it with their own modern approaches to jazz and hip-hop. The result is a musical mixtape that’s rich with culture and tradition — just like the one Larnell’s father played for the family every Christmas while preparing their home for the joys of the holiday season. \nWatch it LIVE on jazz.fm91’s YouTube channel. \nEnjoy this Sound of Jazz: Live to Air concert in partnership with KEF.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Shepherd presented by Hugh's Room Live
DESCRIPTION:Velvety-voiced pianist Elizabeth Shepherd arrived on the international scene in 2006 when her debut album ‘Start To Move’ was voted one of the top jazz albums of the year by listeners of the influential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio Worldwide. Since then\, the Montreal-based soul-jazz innovator has established herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene today. A classical pianist who came to jazz through her love of old-school hip-hop\, it’s perhaps no surprise that this globetrotting talent has developed such a distinct and unique voice. \nElizabeth has been hailed as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility” (The Globe and Mail) and praised by critics worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. Alongside Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper\, she is among the new wave of jazz-influenced musicians bringing the art form to a younger generation of music fans. The six-time JUNO nominee and two-time Polaris-Prize nominee has released seven widely acclaimed records\, featuring collaborations with such musicians as Lionel Loueke and UK producer Nostalgia 77. She has toured extensively in North America\, Europe\, Japan and Mexico\, selling out shows from the Cotton Club (Tokyo) to The Jazz Cafe (London\, UK) to the North Sea and ELBJazz Festival. She has shared the stage with such great diverse acts as Christian MacBride\, Victor Wooten\, Spankie Wilson\, the Quantic Soul Orchestra\, the Five Corners Quintet\, Bonobo\, and was also personally invited to open for Jamie Cullum at a sold-out Hollywood Bowl show. \nHer newest project\, Three Things\, is the result of 3 years of collaborating with different artists remotely due to Covid restrictions and stay-at-home orders. It is a celebration of hope in the face of darkness\, grace in the face of the unknown\, and the tenacity of the creative forces that carry us through it all.

SUMMARY:Alex Cuba presented by Bravo! Niagara
DESCRIPTION:Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba takes the stage for an intimate solo performance featuring music from his latest album Mendó\, winner of the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. \nAlex Cuba is a Grammy\, Latin Grammy\, and Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter who is not tied to tradition; Alex has a vast musical vision. \nHis sugarcane-sweet melodies\, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs relinquish conventional stereotypes that exemplify much of the Latin music landscape. Always creating something fresh and new\, Cuba’s musical evolution for years has been all about searching for the simplicity and soul in Cuban music – taking apart the complex arrangements\, mixing it with North American influences\, adopting the melodic simplicity of pop music\, looking to Cuban folk traditions for inspiration – he’s always exploring\, always creating something fresh and new\, and always\, it seems\, getting it just right.

SUMMARY:Cécile McLorin Salvant at Koerner Hall
DESCRIPTION:“She sings standards\, show tunes and old novelties in a taut\, flinty\, elusively beautiful voice\, erring toward material with difficult lyrics and tough places in history.” (The New York Times) Cécile McLorin Salvant is a composer\, singer\, and visual artist. The late Jessye Norman described her as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality\, which light up every note she sings.” Salvant has developed a passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville\, blues\, folk traditions from around the world\, theatre\, jazz\, and Baroque music. She is an eclectic curator\, unearthing rarely recorded\, forgotten songs with strong narratives\, interesting power dynamics\, unexpected twists\, and humour. She won the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010 and has received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for three consecutive albums. In 2020\, she received the MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award. Nonesuch Records released her latest recording\, Ghost Song\, in March 2022.

SUMMARY:Matt Andersen & The Big Bottle of Joy
DESCRIPTION:Massey Hall presents… \nWhen Matt Andersen steps on stage\, he brings a lifetime of music to every note he plays. His latest album\, The Big Bottle of Joy\, is all about hard-won celebration; a dozen songs infused with raw blues-rock\, rollicking Americana\, thoughtful folk\, and ecstatic gospel. Andersen’s stage presence\, buoyed by his spectacular live band (also called The Big Bottle of Joy)\, is informed by decades of cutting his teeth in dusty clubs\, dim-lit bars\, and grand theatres all over the world\, delivering soulful performances that run the gamut from intimate to wall-shaking. In the studio\, he’s always brought the same attention to detail and commitment to craft as he has to his live show\, and the result—a multi-faceted and poignant body of work—has led him to amass over 22 million streams on Spotify and 26 million views on YouTube. In addition to headlining major festivals\, clubs and theatres throughout North America\, Europe and Australia\, he has shared the stage and toured with Marcus King\, Beth Hart\, Marty Stuart\, Greg Allman\, Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Randy Bachman\, Jonny Lang\, Serena Ryder\, and more. Andersen nabbed the 2013 and 2016 European Blues Awards for Best Solo/Acoustic Act\, was the first ever Canadian to take home top honours in the solo category at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, won the CIMA Road Gold award in 2015\, and has won multiple Maple Blues Awards.
